Lulu Hypermarket

Client sector: Retail | Location: UAE | Asset: Steel-framed hypermarket
ESG provided the structural engineering for the Lulu Hypermarket, a large retail development in the UAE. The brief called for wide, column-light shopping floors under a long-span steel roof. ESG engineered the steel structure and supervised its construction on site. The result is an efficient, open retail hall delivered to a tight programme.
Project Overview
The hypermarket covers a built-up area of about 33,000 square metres. Long clear spans keep the shopping floor open and flexible for changing layouts. A steel structural frame carries the wide roof and service zones. ESG sized the framing around retail loads, services and circulation. The scheme balances open space with a buildable, economical structure.
Scope of Work
- Structural analysis, modelling and calculations for the steel structures.
- Full detailed structural design drawings.
- Tender specification for the civil works.
- Site supervision through construction.
- Coordination of retail, storage and service zones.
Structural Approach
A steel frame was chosen for its long spans and fast erection. Clear-span portal and truss framing opened up the retail floor. Connections and bracing were detailed for straightforward fabrication. The roof framing carried services, plant and rooftop loads. ESG’s site supervision kept the build aligned with the design intent.
Durability and Standards
The design follows recognised international structural codes. Steel protection and detailing were specified for a long service life in the regional climate. The frame leaves room to adapt as retail needs change. The result is a robust, code-compliant retail structure.
Project Outcomes
The Lulu Hypermarket gives its community a major modern retail destination. ESG’s steel frame delivers wide, open shopping floors with few columns. On-site supervision held quality from drawing through to erection. The completed structure is efficient, durable and ready for years of trading.
