Ruwais Hospital Extension

Client sector: Healthcare | Location: UAE | Asset: Live-hospital extension and new steel facilities
ESG provided the structural engineering for the Ruwais Hospital Extension. The project added capacity to a hospital that stayed in full operation. Our brief was to build above and beside live clinical areas safely. Steel framing was chosen for speed and a light structural footprint.
Project Overview
The works extend the existing hospital in two ways. New facilities were added above the existing hospital roof. Two further buildings were constructed independently on the site. These are a triage building and a warehouse for storage. The triage building was the most critical structure in the brief.
Scope of Work
- Structural analysis, modelling, and calculations for steel-framed buildings.
- Preparation of all detailed structural design drawings.
- Assessment of the existing structure before adding new loads.
- Design of independent foundations for the new facilities.
- Coordination with the live hospital’s ongoing operations.
Structural Approach
Lightweight steel kept added loads on the existing frame low. Roof-level additions were checked against the original design capacity. The independent triage and warehouse buildings used their own foundations. This isolated them from movement of the existing structure. Connections were detailed for fast, low-disruption erection.
Durability and Standards
The steel design follows recognised international codes. Protective detailing was specified for the coastal environment. The triage facility was prioritised for emergency resilience. The extension expanded capacity without closing the working hospital.
Project Outcomes
The extension lifted hospital capacity without pausing patient care. Building above the live roof demanded careful load control throughout. The standalone triage and warehouse buildings were delivered alongside this work. Steel framing kept the programme short and the site disruption low. ESG’s checks confirmed the existing structure could carry the new additions. The result is a larger, more resilient hospital that stayed open throughout.
