Data-Driven Service

Structural Health Monitoring

Data-driven SHM systems using sensors and real-time analytics to continuously monitor structural condition and enable proactive, evidence-based maintenance.

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is the data-driven successor to periodic visual inspection. ESG designs, deploys and interprets SHM systems for bridges, high-rise buildings and critical infrastructure — giving owners continuous visibility into structural behaviour and early warning of performance drift long before conventional inspection would detect it.

Capabilities

What We Deliver

Monitoring System Design

End-to-end SHM system architecture — sensor selection, placement strategy, data acquisition hardware, power and communications, cloud data pipeline, and dashboards tailored to the asset owner’s decision needs.

Sensor Deployment

Installation of strain gauges, accelerometers, tiltmeters, displacement transducers, temperature sensors, corrosion probes and fibre-optic systems on new-build and existing structures.

Data Analytics & Modal Analysis

Operational modal analysis, damage detection algorithms, threshold-based alerting and correlation of measured response against FE model prediction. Trend analysis over months and years.

Integration with FE Models

Calibrated digital-twin models updated with field data to support load rating, residual life assessment, and scenario analysis (e.g. overload events, ambient temperature extremes).

Decision Support Reporting

Monthly and annual reports translating raw sensor data into actionable engineering recommendations — what to inspect, what to repair, and what can safely be deferred.

Why ESG

Partner With a Specialist

When you engage ESG for structural health monitoring, you are working with a team that treats this as a core discipline, not a bolt-on service line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers from our engineering team

Common questions we receive on this service. If your question is not answered below, our team is happy to discuss it directly.

What sensors does ESG use for SHM?
We deploy strain gauges, accelerometers, tiltmeters, crack meters, LVDTs, fibre-optic strands, and corrosion sensors — selected to match the failure modes the asset owner needs to monitor.
How long does an SHM installation take?
A typical bridge or building installation is completed in 2–6 weeks, including baseline characterisation, sensor commissioning, and dashboard integration. Larger or operational assets are phased.
Can SHM be retrofitted to an existing structure?
Yes. The majority of our SHM programmes are retrofits. We carry out a structural review, identify critical members and failure modes, and select non-intrusive sensor mounting where possible.
What is the difference between SHM and routine inspection?
Routine inspection is periodic and visual; SHM is continuous and sensor-based. SHM detects sudden events (overload, impact, settlement) the moment they happen and trends slow degradation over time — neither replaces the other.
Do you provide a real-time monitoring dashboard?
Yes. Each SHM programme includes a web-based dashboard with live sensor traces, configurable alert thresholds, and email/SMS escalation. Asset owners and consultants are given role-based access.
